A Day in the Life - Vol. 2: Summer 2015: BIRTHDAY EDITION!

I want it to be known that it is 8:35 at night.  All day long I have dictated my day.  I have taken pictures. And now I sat down to get started and my dictation is gone!  GONE!
So I have to try and remember everything...based on the pictures I took.  I was going to just start over tomorrow.  Do it all over again.  But this is a day in the life of Dana...and Dana does dumb stuff like this.  AND lucky for me, I picked a work day.  There just isn't much that goes on during the day of a work day.  I promise to pick a weekend next time!

Date: Tuesday, July 7, 2015
Dana: 35 - TODAY
Andy: 37
Eleanor: 6 (Summer before 1st grade)
Oliver: 10 mo. 12 days
Karl: 10 (Still in our cast of characters...although, I don't believe he receives much love in this edition)

3:33 A.M.|| Oliver is fussing in his crib.  Andy gets out of bed and "Nuks him".  Usually all we have to do at night is get out of bed, put his nuk in his mouth, turn on George the Giraffe, and rub his back a few times.  Andy is back in bed in no time.

4:44 A.M.|| Oliver is up again.  Grrr.  This is not cool.  His night sleep is regressing...what happened?  I don't even know now, did I go in there - did Andy go in there?  What ever happened, it lasted a while and Oliver did NOT go back to bed.

5:04 A.M.|| I decide we need to try something new.  Kid needs to figure out how to put himself back to sleep on his own.  4:44 is NOT time to get up.  I suggest to Andy we make him a bottle, give it to him in bed.  Only that doesn't really work because he's never really eaten a bottle on his own and he can't really hold it up.

5:15 A.M|| Oliver is still crying in his crib.  OK, he's screaming.  He's TIRED.  Why doesn't he recognize this.  I'm giving him 5 more minutes.

5:21 A.M.|| I should have taken video.  He's not stopping...I guess you don't decide to let your son cry it out at 4 AM in the morning.  Andy wishes me Happy Birthday.  I check Facebook and see if any of the messages have started (**Side note...I really debated about using my birthday as the DITL post.  It seems a little self-promoting.  But then again...designating a blog to your life is probably a little self-promoting anyway...soooooo, I went with it!)  I LOVE my birthday...and I'm happy to see I've already received some lovin' on FB.  At some point, I decide it's time to get Oliver.  I bring him into bed with us.  He's immediately happy.

5:44 A.M.|| If I'm going to be up, I might as well get in the shower.  Andy and Oliver head downstairs...although, I'm not really sure why.  He already had his morning bottle.  He can't possibly be hungry.

I shower and check the weather - I can't believe how cool it is for July 7th!  I find the Air Quality warning so interesting too.  Our forecast calls for "smoke".  Air patterns...how interesting!

So this is why Andy and Oliver went downstairs...not only did they make my coffee, they brought it up to me too.  See....birthdays are the best.  Talk about self-promotion...nice choice of mugs, Andy!

6:12 A.M.|| I'm already ready and heading downstairs.  Mornings move pretty quickly when they start 16 minutes earlier than normal (thanks, Oliver).  I see Oliver has been busy playing in the Tupperware cabinet this morning.

Sometime during all this Eleanor wakes up - I don't know when because I deleted my dictation!  She's not in any mood for my picture taking this morning!  I also need to remind her that it's my birthday.  I'm not ashamed.

6:48 A.M.|| Oliver and I are in the car.  The earlier I get to work, the more likely I am to actually leave at 4:30 like I would like to.  My morning went fast because a) I did not need to pack a lunch and b) Oliver has had us up since before the sun came up.

I'm my chit chatty self on the way to daycare, but Oliver seems very quiet.  Is he asleep?  I think he's asleep!!  I try to grab a picture in the review mirror when I pull up to the stop light, but I can't grab a good angle...how do you people do it?  But  I really do think he's sleeping!

6:5- A.M.|| I pull into the parking lot...yup...he's sleeping!!  Of course, as soon as I open my door, he snaps out of it and gives me a look that says, "What?  I wasn't sleeping!"

So, into daycare I go, with my red eyed, very sleepy baby...I put away his food for the day and make sure Oliver is situated by playing with him for a little bit.  I do my normal morning chit-chat with the teachers and then it's off I go.

7:11 A.M.|| I'm back in the car.  And that's all I have to say about that!

7:21 A.M.|| Have I mentioned how much I love my commute?  I'm already at work!  I walk into the building and up to my door.  Cute - one of my co-workers drew a picture and taped it on my door for my birthday.  And then I opened my door...Wow!!  My office is all decked out for my birthday and I feel SO lucky!!

8:05 A.M.|| I can not concentrate today...but look - even Google is celebrating my birthday!

9:00 A.M.|| My intern arrives at work and brings me a tray of my own M&M brownies.  My own tray.  Clean eating be damned....I grab one.  Well, it's stuck to another one, so I guess I grab two!

10:00 A.M.|| I mean...this morning!  I really haven't gotten anything done - there are MANY distractions.  Honestly, I've gotten some work done, but nothing of note.   I've been working on an e-mail most of the morning and now it's time for a meeting.  A mediated meeting between two employees.

10:57 A.M.|| *Sigh* I think that went well...but who knows.  I did a lot more talking then I was going to, which means I didn't take very good notes...which means it'll be very hard to send summary notes to both participants.  I better get started on those while it's still fresh in my mind.  Maybe I should have a brownie first.

11:29 A.M. || I'm being summoned to my next meeting: production meeting regarding safety and cell phone use. I'm happy that all I have to do at this one is show up for support.  E-A-S-Y.

12:04 P.M.|| I'm happy to report that there is finally some talk of lunch.  My team is taking me out for my birthday, we just have decide where...although I all think we know...Chipotle! I originally wanted Fro-Yo for lunch, but decided that an actual meal was probably a better idea.  Besides, I'm going to pick up ice cream for my birthday work treat.  I guess I shouldn't have ice cream after Fro-Yo!

12:13 P.M.|| I'm a sucker for Mexican.  Even if you don't really consider chain Mexican actual Mexican.  It's still delicious and I am H-A-P-P-Y (I think Eleanor is wearing off on me...I'm noticing how much I spell out words.  It's one of her favorite things to do and it's great practice...so as annoying as it is, we encourage it).

1:33 P.M. || I have a 2:05 meeting, so we really better pick up the pace, but I need to make a quick stop at Pick N Save to pick up birthday treats.  I REALLY meant to snap a picture in the frozen food aisle, but forgot and wanted to be discreet.  My team already things I'm crazy.  I don't want to give them too much ammunition!

Back at work - unsure of exact time...because I deleted my dictation, but surprised at how well my old memory could recall as much as it did!  I'm cutting things pretty close to my meeting, but I need to get the ice cream buffet set up and I need some ice cream before my meeting.  Good gosh is this delicious!  News of the ice cream travels fast and soon there is a line.  I love office treats...

I run into my boss in the breakroom. CRAP, I forgot I told him I needed to meet with him before our 2:05 meeting...I guess he knows me well enough to know he can find me in the breakroom!  We meet in my office quickly to discuss my earlier meeting.  We can't talk long because we have to head into our Leadership Meeting

2:06 P.M.|| Commence Leadership meeting...

3:06 P.M.|| This meeting is still going on...I have my phone with me and I keep getting text messages.  I feel super birthday special, but I also know it's pretty unprofessional of me to keep checking my phone.  Oh well!

3:35 P.M.|| That was kind of brutal...but it's over.

4:29 P.M.|| Out the door - I could get used to leaving this early all the time.  I'm usually in around 7:30, but still find myself working until 5 on a regular basis.  However, I need to get going today if I want to get a run in before Eleanor has gymnastics.  Andy has a volleyball tournament tomorrow and Thursday is book club, so I better get 5 in tonight.

About 6 minutes later|| I'm home and greeted at the door by a very excited 6 year old.  Apparently she's more awake now then this morning and wants to celebrate my birthday NOW.  She almost slips up with what she got me, but Andy stops her and reminds her I need to run first.  Oliver is oblivious to the commotion around him.  I run upstairs a change.

About another 6 minutes later|| This is when that dictation would be really helpful.  Things move at warp speed the minute I get in the house.  I don't really look at the clock much; more-so just read the time into my phone.  But in no time flat I'm out the door and on my route.

It's a beautiful run and I'm really pleased with my time and how I feel after.  It gives me a little more mental preparation for Saturday's 8 miler.

Eleanor meets me at the door and rushes off to get my cold water.  It's so sweet and actually she does it more often than not!  She insists I open cards and presents right away.  I guess I'll stretch later...I mean, who am I to deny an excited 6 year old?

My cards are fantastic and Eleanor is excited to present some new headbands for running.  She really wanted to pick something out for running. I model the headbands and they feel like really good ones that won't slip off my misshapen head!

5:59 P.M.|| Andy and Eleanor out the door.  I guess my birthday celebration is over.

I try to finish stretching with a 10 month old.  It's not easy and I'm going to feel this tomorrow.  I do notice, as Oliver is crawling all over me, including my head, that he smells and has provided me with a nice birthday poop.  Once he's cleaned up and I'm back in the family room, I can't shake the smell. Did I get poop on the carpet?  On me?  My sock?  I notice a big spot on my sock...what is that? Thankfully, it's not poop...unfortunately, it's blood.  It is far too early in training to have bloody heels.  I'll worry about that on Saturday and chalk it up to poorly chosen socks.  Again, thank goodness it wasn't poop.

6:24 P.M.|| Andy is back from taking Eleanor.  Honestly, I have NO idea why we decided on our schedule this way.  Originally, Andy was going to take Oliver with him to drop off E and then come back home so he didn't need to keep Oliver with him during gymnastics.  But I managed to get my complete run in before he left...I think he just didn't want to stay at gymnastics.  Not that I blame him.
But now that he's home, I better get in the shower quick so I can turn around to go pick up Eleanor.

6:38 P.M.|| I'm in the car and on my way to gymnastics.  Andy is putting Oliver to bed.  Gosh he looked tired.  He BETTER sleep tonight!

I'm at gymnastics in just a few minutes and get ready to start reading for a few minutes before I Have to head inside.  But my mom calls.  She and my dad are in Cooperstown, NY with my sister and her family for my nephew's baseball tournament.  She wishes me a happy birthday and gets my caught up on the tournament.  It sounds crazy intense!  Maybe I don't want to be a baseball mom...

7:00 P.M.|| Our conversation wraps up and I decided to head inside - I never know when gymnastics is really going to end.  Sometimes they get done early and sometimes they get done late.  Ew.  This place smells like feet.

7:15 P.M.|| Gymnastics is over - right on time tonight!  I received the recommendation for Eleanor's fall semester.  It looks like Eleanor is on the "Rec route", which is pretty hilarious because  Eleanor has finally admitted to us that she doesn't really like gymnastics - DUH - I could have told you that months ago!  Eleanor is pretty excited that gymnastics is over now...unfortunately, she thinks it's over for the summer and I inform her she still has a few more classes left.  Maybe she doesn't like that the gym smells like feet either?  I encourage her that gymnastics will help her with ballet and she, of course, argues that I'm wrong.

On the ride home Eleanor tells me all about what she wants to do for dad's birthday in October.  Part of the plan is to make him a banner - she informs me I didn't get a banner because she didn't really plan that far ahead for my birthday.  She says, "I just wasn't thinking about it".  Thanks, Eleanor.

Home - Eleanor runs upstairs to shower quick and then gets to come back downstairs for birthday cake!  Andy worked really hard on this treat.  We've been trying SO hard to practice "Clean Eating" and living by the 80/20 rule.  Unfortunately, since our Vegas vacation I've been eating "20" and am having a hard time getting back.  At least it's a no guilt cake...and it's DELICIOUS!  Well done, Chef Andy!

7:46 P.M.||  Eleanor and I head upstairs for bed.  We've been reading the "Little House on the Prairie" book series and we are on "On the Shores of Silver Lake".  Eleanor talks me into reading two chapters.  Usually she reads some, but tonight I read both.  I can easily get talked into two chapters these days...I really don't remember reading this book and I'm enjoying it just as much as she is!

8:14 P.M.|| Back downstairs...Andy razzes me a bit for how much longer it takes me and Eleanor to go to bed than it takes him.  We finally sit down for dinner.  GOOD GRIEF!

8:35 P.M.|| I sit on the couch and open my computer.  Better start putting together this post or I'll never do it.  And that's when I realize...the dictation is gone...Better pour me another glass of wine, Andy!

8:41 P.M.|| - Eleanor just came downstairs to let us know that Frank needs new batteries.  Wow.  That's strange.   I didn't think she staid up this late in bed.  She can make the decision to read in bed for a bit  after we read with her.  Usually, she reads a few pages and goes right to bed.  Clearly, not the case tonight.  This is not good...Why aren't any of my kids sleeping these days??

I finish updating my DITL - I did pretty good and feel caught up.  Andy has the Brewer's game on and is texting friends about the upcoming weekend adventure to Minnesota.

9:45 P.M.|| I should go to bed...but I had to respond to all of my FB birthday messages!  Really everyone has done such a great job of providing me with Birthday Lovin!

10:02 P.M.|| I'm finally in bed.  I don't want to go to bed because that means my birthday is over for another year.  But, I hope this is truly the end of my DITL post because that means that at least Oliver will have slept through the night.

**For the record...Oliver did NOT sleep through the night.  It was another night of him getting up several times.  What is going on??**

  1. A DIL post on your birthday, how awesome ! And I love how everyone in you're life makes an effort to celebrate your birthday. I find as I get older they seem to be creeping into that "just another day" category and that is no fun !!
